Dear Optimal Level Members:

Even though our weather over the past few days has been especially beautiful and definitely remarkable, it is the political scene that is exceptional and must be a topic worth noting.  I have been hearing a lot of excitement from many friends and acquaintances about this historic election.  Democrats and Republicans alike recognize the impact that changing Presidents and administrations have on our country during these challenging times.  I am writing this on Election Day so like all of you I look forward to the possibilities that lie ahead after this voting day.

I do want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving.  I was going to take it easy this year, but things changed and I am very pleased to be having Thanksgiving at my home with several guests.  Anyone have any special recipes?

Tip of the Month:  Avoid and Hoopla and the Abyss – There is something lemming-like about us humans when something spectacular or a national event or circumstance occurs.  I refer to this as hoopla; we all like to jump on the same band wagon.  This actually drives me nuts.  The current financial situation is a good example of this group-think that we all take part in and like the lemmings just follow the person in front of us – even if that means we’d jump off a mountain.

Acknowledge that this is happening and just continue to do what you do.  Don’t get caught up in the gossipy wave of the drama.  In 1980, when I first started selling for what was at the time my father’s scrap iron and metal company, I encountered so many business owners sitting around doing nothing because they had no business, no product to make.  Those were difficult times, yet they came to work and made the best of the times.  I kept walking through doors until I found people who had business, were making product, and had scrap metal.

Don’t get caught up in the mass-commiserating or you will find yourself with zillions of others in this abyss, a dark, negative, nasty place where misery is served up.  The two links in Of Interest to You (below) are timely and excellent articles, one by Kathleen McEntee, McEntee Associates and the other by Ray Silverstein, President’s Resource Organization, to help you through business in our current economic climate.

Of Interest to You  First, How To Survive in Tough Times offers 5 tips to help you stay in the black and then, Sell Smarter, Not Harder, offers solid ideas on what to do to get more sales.

Speaking of growing your business, you have a whole network of women available to you through Optimal Level!  Go to our blog, read the profiles, and call someone.  Or, take advantage of our Meet Another Member Program  (see below).  Refer to one another; that’s a great way to build your business.  As I was doing one of our Midterm Evaluations, one of our members suggested that a way to improve benefits for our Optimal Level members is to help the members refer business.  You don’t have to leave the house or pay money to go to another networking event.  Go to the blog, find someone you would like to talk to or meet, pick up the phone and call!

Optimal Level's Blog Features
The Optimal Level blog is available to everyone and we still have our members-only section. Remember to log in to get the members-only section.  Login is not necessary to read the following features:

  • Her Journey to Her Optimal Level – a blog written by an unusually successful business or professional woman who overcame obstacles, faced challenges head on, who dealt with work and home demands, climbed to a place of influence, and took her own path to success.  She will offer tips and describe her path to success.

Our November guest blogger is Judy Kaplan, founder, owner and CEO of Empower Woman Publications,  a woman who is passionate about helping others and accomplishing her goals. She helps women every day and supports multiple charities through her publication.  Some people become attracted to something that interests  them and then think or dream about it.  Judy discovers what is important to her, what she has to do to turn that into reality, and then does it.  If you are interested in how successful women make it to the top, Judy’s  blog is key.  Optimal Level is honored to have Judy Kaplan as our November special guest mentor blogger.  Under “Main Page” on the left of the home page, click on “Journey.” Please respond with your comments by clicking on “Leave Comment” which follows the blog.

  • Featured Member of the Month – Julie Trotter Clark, President or the JT Clark Agency and Les Jetons – Though increasingly occupied with many responsibilities as President and CEO, Julie is still the creative “heart” and driving force of the 20 year-old JT Clark Agency.  With her vision and the many insights gained from 20-plus years in marketing, design and communication, Julie has formed her business around the core principle of Marketing Solutions by Design.  She has taught college-level courses in design and lectured on “Brand” and the creative process at the MBA Level. Now, her creativity has spilled over to our benefit creating the most unique and beautiful jewelry in our country.  Whether you can help with her top challenge or can benefit from her wisdom, go to our blog and read all about her.   Under “Main Page” on the left of the home page, click on “Featured Members.”  Please respond with your comments by clicking on “Leave Comment” which follows the blog.

November Flower – Chrysanthemum - The chrysanthemum means compassion, friendship and secret love. This flower can be red, white or yellow. Chrysanthemums have been grown by the Chinese for over 2,000 years. This flower is also a symbol of the sun. Chrysanthemum was named after the Greek word which means gold flower.

November BirthstoneCitrine is any quartz crystal or cluster that is yellow or orange in color. Although often cut as a gemstone, citrine is actually somewhat rare in nature. Most citrines on the market have been heat treated. Specimens of low grade, inexpensive amethyst or smoky quartz are often cooked at high temperatures to produce the more profitable orange yellow citrine. Citrines whose colors have been produced by artificial means tend to have much more of an orange or reddish cast than those found in nature, which are usually a pale yellow. Much of the natural citrine may have started out as amethyst but heat from nearby magmatic bodies may have caused the change to citrine.

Meet Another Member Program
This is a wonderful way to network.  Who wants to meet another member?  Any one interested this month?  Go to the blog (get your password and user ID from your welcome letter or send email to Sandy, sandy@ineedashadow.com for it) and read all the profiles.  Decide who you would like to meet and let me know.  I will send an e-intro!

Member Profiles - Remember, every member's profile is posted on www.WomenBizPower.net.   Your User ID and Password are in the Welcome Letter you received in email soon after you joined Optimal Level.  If you cannot find this information, send a quick email to Sandy, a sister member and my wonderful assistant, sandy@ineedashadow.com, and she will give you this information.  This is another great way to read about all of your sister members and see if you would like to call or email her to have a conversation or get together.  An Optimal Level member mentioned to me recently that so many members have not posted profiles.  We keep asking for them.  Any suggestions how to coax those members to offer profiles?

Marketing -   Remember, every member is welcome to market by mail, email, phone, etc. to each Optimal Level member.  Get the information by logging onto our member blog, www.WomenBizPower.net.  Search here first when you want a new service or product.

Library – Would you like to borrow a book from the Optimal Level library?  Check it out on the blog and then send email letting me know which book you would like me to bring for you to your next meeting.  If you have a book out, please return it at the next meeting.

Monthly Readings –  Want to get the book we are reading in future months at our Optimal Level meeting?  Go to our blog site and click on Monthly Readings.  All the books we will be reading are there through the end of 2008.

Referrals  -  If you like Optimal Level and believe in the value you have received, please tell me who you know who would want to get the same kind of help, meet all of our members, and enjoy the camaraderie of the meetings.  Send me your suggestions along with contact information.  Perhaps you might like to call them first and let them know I will be calling them.  I so appreciate all of your referrals. Remember, 3 free meetings on your next enrollment if someone you refer joins Optimal Level!
